The significance of health has developed gradually. In keeping with the biomedical perspective, early meanings of health focused on the theme of the body's ability to work; health was viewed as a state of typical function that could be interrupted from time to time by disease. An example of such a meaning of health is: "a state identified by anatomic, physiologic, and psychological integrity; ability to carry out personally valued household, work, and community roles; capability to handle physical, biological, psychological, and social tension". Then in 1948, in an extreme departure from previous meanings, the World Health Company (WHO) proposed a meaning that intended greater: connecting health to wellness, in terms of "physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the lack of illness and imperfection".
